 Audience effects theory: blog tasks


 

Create a new blogpost called ‘Audience Effects Theory’ and complete the following tasks:

1) Write a definition of a passive audience: A passive audience is an audience that barely observes events then actively responding to it.

2) Write a definition of an active audience: An active audience is audience that dont usually recieve information passively and are activtely involved.

3) Write a definition of the hypodermic needle theory: The hypodermic theory told people the tv would make you believe anything they wanted to.

4) Write down a media product for each category of Blumler and Katz's Uses and Gratifications theory and WHY it fits that particular audience use/gratification: 

INFORMATION/SURVEILLANCE: This would be news programmes or weather or a documentary like Blue Planet
 > Why: This is because the news tells you current affairs and is factual; documentaries
PERSONAL IDENTITY: Like Ackhely Bridge it shows different relationships and different contrasting things.
 > Why: It shows personal identity by showing arranged marriage which many can relate to. 
DIVERSION/ENTERTAINMENT: 
 > Why:
RELATIONSHIPS: Arranged marriages, homosexuality etc.
 > Why: It is all shown in the show.

5) Re-watch the clip from Blue Planet above and write a paragraph analysing how elements of the clip offer the audience pleasures or gratifications (use media terminology from Uses and Gratifications theory and the 3 Vs - notes outlined above). 
The elements of this clip are a variety of different animals and colours that are shown in the doccumentrie to try and show the animals.The elements show animals in depth and in high definition.To try and show the audience and make them have a 

Extension: To take this further, select a media text of your own choice, embed it in your blog and write another detailed paragraph analysing the audience pleasures in that product.

Extension question 2: Think about the hypodermic needle theory. Do you think most audiences believe everything they see in the media? Why? Explain your answer and try to argue both sides.
